Meditation enables you to separate yourself from your thoughts and handle situations differently. In doing so you maintain optimum health of body and mind.
Before you begin to meditate ask yourself if there is anything that you really have to do that can't wait ten or fifteen minutes. That's the length of time you'll spend in meditation initially.
Set yourself a goal or question and keep a record of it. That way when you receive insight or an answer to your question following your meditation you know what it is in relation to.
Some answers appear straight away, while other appear more subtly; in the form of a person you meet who teaches you what you need to learn, or a repeated song on the radio, or more likely a deep seated conviction that what you need to do is .....
Be gentle with yourself. So what if a thought intrudes. You're learning. Not one single person on Earth ever went from being a baby to a toddler without falling many times until they mastered the skill of walking. That's what it's like with meditation. It takes practice that's all.
You can do it.
Remember that meditation is all about maintaining single pointed focus.
Focus on an object. There are a wealth of techniques but one that I like to teach my students is to focus on a light.
Objects are fine too.
Over time, you may want to focus on a word or phrase called a Mantra. This word or phrase can be as simple as:
Love
Peace
Light
I Am Loved
I am Healthy
When thought do intrude, do not become attached to them, otherwise who knows where you'll end up. The mind is a vast place. Know that this will happen in the beginning but it does become less and less frequent.
You acknowledge that the thoughts are there and return to your object or word of focus. (I'll discuss other forms of mantra at a later date as you become more proficient) Continue focusing and when you sense that your ready to end your meditation session slowly open your eyes.
That's the Healthy, Wealthy, and Really Smart way to control your thoughts when you meditate.
