HEALTHY MIND, HEALTHY BODY
The causal relationship between germs and illness has been known for many years. If you expose yourself to a particular germ you are likely to succumb to it, if you don’t take adequate precautions such as washing your hands.
However, modern research has now shown that just because you are EXPOSED to or even CARRYING a germ, you may not actually develop the disease if your immune system is STRONG.
Many factors weaken the body’s ability to fight infection.
It is estimated that an average person thinks about 12,000 thoughts per day, while a deep thinker can think up to 50,000 thoughts.
Deepak Chopra states that while 95% of what we think ARE the same thoughts as we had yesterday, 75% of the average person’s thoughts are negative.
That’s between 9,000 and almost 38,000 negative thoughts every single day.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE
A positive attitude and environment goes a long way in keeping you healthy.
Who or What limits you?
What supplies you with your best flow of positive energy?
AFFIRMATION
Bring awareness to the breath and the link between the mind and body.
Slow the breath down until it becomes slow, steady, and even.
This may take a few breaths or a few minutes.
Take as long as you need.
With each exhalation I breath out all that is stressful.
With each inhalation I breathe in peace.
I am strong and resilient.
I am whole and healthy.
I am ready to receive.
There are NO limitations to your possibilities. Make your thoughts as wonderful and extraordinary as YOU are, and see the transformation that occurs. Inner Knowledge is now available in print. It can enrich your quality of life, open up new possibilities, and strengthen your resilience to deal with daily challenges. You don’t have to practice yoga or dedicate hours of your time to reap the benefits!

LEARNING TO MEDITATE
LEARN TO MEDITATE BY TRAINING THE MIND TO MOVE BEYOND OBSTACLES
LEARNING TO MEDITATE is achievable by anyone in a few simple steps.
The mind is in the habit of following a random train of thoughts and when you are learning to meditate you are effectively teaching it to follow a single-point of focus. In other words, what you are doing is training the mind to meditate.
Concentration
Concentration of the mind can last from a few seconds to several hours. When you perform any task you are focused on it, whether it is tying your shoelaces or following a recipe, and as you know, if the mind is distracted the task takes longer or steps may be missed and mistakes occur.
When a beginner is learning to meditate, it is not easy for the mind to concentrate on the breath or the space between the breath when it is trying to meditate. The beginner mind often needs an object to focus on, then with practice, the mind enters into a meditative state with ease and can focus on light, space, and connect with the Supreme Consciousness.
TRAIN THE MIND TO MEDITATE BY FOCUSING ON A SINGLE OBJECT
Steps for Concentration for Meditation
- Find a pleasing object that holds your interest such as a flower, a lit candle, a rock.
- Sit in a comfortable seated position that you can stay in without fidgeting.
- Gaze at the object without any eye strain. Notice how beautiful it is. Marvel at it's creation.
- After a few minutes, close your eyes and hold the memory of the object in your mind's eye.
- If it disappears, gaze at your object again for a little while longer then close your eyes and concentrate on your chosen image.
- With practice, you will be able to close your eyes and bring the object to mind instantly.
- Now you can focus on more subtle objects such as the breath, inner light, healing sound such as OM.
Whatever you focus on, your mind forms thoughts, emotions, and actions around a particular stream of thinking.
For example, if you focus on a strawberry, notice the colors and the perfume of the fruit, your mouth waters in memory of how sweet and juicy the fruit tastes and so you decide that you must have one.
During Meditation, when you are able to focus not on physical objects but on pure objects such as love or God, you become like the essence of what you are concentrating on.
You Can Do It
Meditation takes practice, but it is easily doable. Many people struggle because they try it once or twice by attempting to empty the mind, but that is too challenging because the mind is not under control. It keeps on leaping around.
The simple steps above will help you to achieve concentration and take control of the mind.
In turn, you will find that you progress very quickly from holding an external image in your mind to one where you enter into meditation and find the peace and bliss that emerges as a result of meditation.

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS CHANGE THE MIND LIKE THE CHANGING SEASONS
We all use affirmations hundreds of time every day. However these affirmations are not the ones that we want to continue using. Every thought that you have affirms a choice or a decision that may or may not be in your best interest. They're filled with doubts and negativity, but are powerful nevertheless.
Changing your thoughts and life is possible through the use of POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS.
They allow you to nurture yourself through kindness and are an internal cheerleader, helping you achieve your goals.
How Affirmations Work
Your mind cannot hold two thoughts at the same time.
You have a choice therefore to replace negative thoughts with powerful positive ones.
Holding a positive affirmation in your mind, carrying it with you, repeating it, believing it, makes the mind less resistant to change and eventually it slips into a positive way of thinking on a deep subconscious level.
All Affirmations must be positive in nature and use the present tense as though you already have what you need in your life and have created the changes that you seek.
When you are open to change, you will see opportunities present themselves before you for you to take hold of and use to your advantage. What you need will come to you, often when least expected. Even if you don't feel ready or prepared enough, accept that it has arrived for a reason and will help you.
You will not be given more than you can cope with. You will grow as an individual and in turn be able to help others by perhaps being the answer to or the completion of an affirmation that they have asked for.
Affirmations for Happiness:
I choose to be grateful and kind
I am successful in all that I do
I am happy
In this moment I am at peace
I have peace in all areas of my life.
Affirmations for Love:
My family life is loving and kind
I choose to give love
All aspects of my being are filled with love
Affirmations for Health:
I am filling each cell with light and creating a new body.
I have abundant energy to complete all my tasks
I am filled with vitality in body, mind, and spirit
Affirmations for Wealth:
All my needs are being met
I have abundance in my life
I receive whatever I need
Affirmations: Positive, Powerful, and Your Key to Happiness
Create Your Own Affirmations
- All your affirmations must be positive in nature and in the present tense.
- State your affirmation as though it is already happening.
- Determine what is important to you, whether it is already a part of your life or not.
- Decide what you want to have in your life.
- Write it all down. That way you can see if you are using the correct positive language.
- Create your list
- Ignore any negative internal voices that tell you:
- you don't deserve to have...
- it won't work
- you're being silly
Your affirmations cost nothing but they achieve everything that you need. Throw out the doubting, negative-accepting thoughts and start believing in yourself.
Thoughts can be changed and by doing so you change your life.

Life Happiness
Happiness is a State of Mind
There is a Sanskrit saying that reads "A man is according to his mind."
If you think that you are happy, you are happy.
If you think that you are miserable, you are miserable.
We make life more complicated than that because of self-imposed restrictions set by the mind. However, you are not bound by the limitations that the mind sets for you, unless you choose to be.
Meditation helps you to rise above the mind and see that the Self is different and separate from the creations of the mind.
The Self is eternally free and Meditation helps you to distinguish your Self from the mind and transcend the mind's perception of reality.

Non-Stick Meditation
When the mind is free from all obstacles, it can view the world clearly. Life will continue to occur around it but the Self is not affected by it. Nothing sticks to the mind. The meditative mind rises above the world and while it sees what is happening around it, it is unaffected by it as though the concerns of the world simply slide right off.
This does not mean though that you become distant or aloof from the world. You live in it, you are a part of it, and you use your new-found compassion to help others reach the calm and tranquil place that you have discovered.
Daily Practice
Practice catching your thoughts, moods, feelings, and alter your thought pattern to reflect a happy state of mind. Notice how you react to what other people are doing and saying and strive to remain centered and at peace.
While reading about and understanding the principles behind meditation are important, even more knowledge and understanding is received during a regular meditation practice.
Without action, nothing is achieved.
Know that there will be days when your practice is smooth and others when you struggle to maintain a connection to a single focus. In time you will overcome all struggles and enter into a meditative state with ease.
New meditation information is added to the site every week with links to my additional articles on how to meditate, reduce stress, and gain inner peace.

Meditation:Healing Stress
Meditation: Healing Stress
When you are in control of your thoughts and emotions, you are in control of your physical body and able to view the world with clarity of vision and compassion. You are able to envisage a better way of living and you also gain a unique perspective of viewing the world around you.
We don’t often think about the importance of maintaining awareness of our thoughts. Think about a race car driver though.

He or she cannot risk the mind wandering and thereby losing concentration. It’s easy to see what may happen.
When any aspect of the body is unhealthy, other parts suffer. A stressed mind adversely affects the body if there is no release from the undue tension. Disease spreads if healing is impinged in any way and when one person is in pain they affect others who see their suffering.
As you take care of your home and environment, should you not also look after your living body and the thoughts that you keep?
Your body, thoughts, choices, and mind all undergo many transitions through each stage in life and you have a choice to either respect and maintain your body at each level to enable it to achieve its highest potential, or to consume and do whatever you want with no thought to the end result either on your own body or on the environment around you.
Meditation

Maintaining a healthy life is determined in part by what you eat and drink, how you think and act, and increasing your devotion to a spiritual path.
All decisions lie with you and it is by taking time through meditation that you are able to know what you should be doing and take the steps necessary to stay on the path even if you do not know where the journey will end and have only a rough idea of the destination.
Meditation both frees and clears mind occurs when you remove the existing thoughts and preconceptions that you carry with you everywhere you go.
It sweeps the area clean for a fresh beginning.
Remaining focused on the present, consciously choosing to act in a loving manner, and living in gratitude on a spiritual path directs the mind inwardly and away from distractions.
Through meditation you achieve conscious relaxation and freedom from stress. Meditation gives you the peace that you seek and helps you keep it.

Affirmation
Release yourself from stress using the following affirmations or words of your own choice that meet your daily needs.
You may first speak them aloud then draw the words in and out silently with each breath.
I am relaxed and free
I am at peace
I am loved and accepting of others
I trust my inner self to lead me in the right path.
I am always connected with the Divine Love in the Universe.

Meditation: Inner Peace
Peace
Noise is everywhere; in the streets, in shops, even inside your head when you keep replaying past conversations. Sounds of laughter, crying, shouting, and music can affect your mood even when it is in the background and you are not aware of paying it very much attention.
So when life gets so hectic and fast paced and you say to yourself, “I just want a break. I need some peace,” where do you go to find it?
A spa? A sacred place of worship? A stroll in the park or by the ocean? A library?
Finding peace can be a temporary fix. When you leave the confines of your special haven, relieved of stress and anxiety, you return to the noise and disruption you faced earlier and before too long you find yourself longing for both the peaceful feelings that you experienced and solitude again.
True lasting peace will not be found if the tranquil place is an external one.
Lasting peace is cultivated over a period of time, provided it is given the right environment so that you can first recognize it, and then enable it to deepen its roots and strengthen over time.
When to Find Peace
Now is the best time. Don’t wait until you think you’re life is so organized that you can step straight into a tranquil existence.
It is through meditation that you experience serenity and tranquility. You create a memory for it within your mind and body.
When feelings of anxiety or stress come upon you, you can draw on the skill-set of meditation and return the breath to a slow and steady state. In doing so you calm the mind and the body, creating a situation that promotes calmness and freedom from worry.
Make Time to Meditate
Meditation is like any other skill, whether it’s tying your shoes or driving a car. It takes practice to learn how to do it. Over time, your meditation practice helps your concerns to dissolve and gives you the knowledge to know how to stay calm in all situations.
You learn how to release the issues that prevent you from experiencing joy and as you go deeper into your meditative practice, you learn how to free yourself from fear and worry.
By tapping into the calmness within, you move into a meditative state with ease and carry the inner peace with you in all your activities.
Meditation leads to peace.

Meditation Benefits
If you've ever wanted to pursue a hobby, diet, or exercise plan and struggled to complete the course, meditation is the solution to your success.

Recent clinical studies have compared what is happening in the brain during the thought process and during meditation. Using fMRI's, they have been able to see the parts of the brain that are involved when you think and when you meditate.
Basically, habits of any kind follow a specific neural pathway within the brain which becomes easier to traverse with each repeated action. This is a good thing otherwise we would all have to re-learn how to dress every morning!
The downside is when a thought or action becomes outdated or is based on fabricated truths where your present experiences continually add to a past experience by telling yourself, "see I knew ... would happen, or so-and-so would be like that."
You are reinforcing past beliefs which have changed over time and are not in fact true any more.
What this means is that your existing habits are well-ingrained and tough to change without assistance. Meditation is the easiest method to use if you are serious about wanting to make a difference in your life.
Brain cells (neurons) switch on and off depending on their specific use, so that your body can successfully function with each body part knowing its role. New thought patterns can be formed, but just like a little-used country path that is covered in undergrowth, it is challenging to walk through at first.

With repeated use it becomes easier to traverse until you can walk through it without any obstacles in your way.
Meditation actually facilitates a new way of thinking.
Rather than rehashing the same experiences, you begin to acquire a different understanding of who you are and what you want based on new and more accurate knowledge of your thoughts and habits.
Meditation promotes relaxation and peace, which the brain likes and wants to return to. When you associate meditation with a new behavior, you actually make it easier to stay on track and not fall back into old habits.
Meditation alleviates struggles and is your very own tool to making life more enjoyable and easier.
Making meditation part of you everyday not only brings peace, but helps you lead the life that you want.

Meditation Relaxation
People often say they want to meditate in order to relax because they're too tense, stressed, or worried and see meditation as a way to create more relaxation in their life.
However, many activities can help you to relax such as:
- owning and petting a cat or dog
- going to a spa
- having a massage
- watching a sunset
- reading a book
- going for a walk
These may help you to relax but what's the difference between meditation and relaxation?
Using fMRI's scientists have been able to see the positive physiological changes in the frontal lobe of the brain that meditation creates. So in addition to creating a relaxation response, meditation changes the brain in ways not previously thought possible, further explaining the reasons why people not only feel good after meditating, but why there is heightened intuition, improved memory, and a "younger" brain.
You can turn your relaxation activities into a meditation experience by the use of single pointed focus.
Next time you sit down with your pet or go for a walk, be mindful about what you are doing.
Focus only on that activity for fifteen minutes. For example, when walking, be aware of what is going on around you, such as vehicles passing by, birds singing, leaves rustling, but not distracted by them.
Focus on each footstep, what the ground feels like, how slow and steady your breath is.
Make each moment a meditation.

Meditation:Concentration
Taking control of the thoughts is central to meditation. The world in which we live in is an instant world, which moves very fast. Expectations are placed upon us to achieve what we set out to do very quickly and this only adds to pressure, stress, and worry. The mind gets used to juggling many tasks and when preparing to meditate it should come as no surprise that the mind is still leaping around and thoughts are hard to still.
Your Meditation Practice
No matter what your ultimate aim of a meditation practice is; greater peace, insight, intuition, connection to God, increased spirituality, or relaxation, if the mind is constantly being pulled in different directions following a seemingly endless trail of thoughts, then your meditation practice ends with disappointment and you may even be tempted to give up.
Train the mind
You can successfully train the mind with a few simple steps.
Before you sit down to meditate, teach the mind to concentrate on ONE single task. Given the multitude of things we do every day, ONE object should be easy. Choose one method and stay with it until it becomes so easy that you can enter into a meditative state with ease.
- Practice mindfulness in all activities e.g. dressing, bathing, pouring water, chewing food. Each activity that you participate in should be examined fully and you will in turn experience not only concentration, but an enhanced appreciation and enjoyment of what you are doing.
- Focus on your breath whenever you have to wait on something or someone. Don't sit gazing around you. Draw the awareness inward to the breath and notice its rate and flow. Expand the breath and slow it down.
- Maintain single-pointed focus by studying a word or phrase in a religious or spiritual book. What does the word or phrase mean to you?
- Relax the mind by gazing at nature elements such as clouds drifting by, waves rolling in the ocean, ripples in water, leaves rustling in trees, and any other object where you can allow the mind to relax and follow without any thought.
- Focus on the space between your thoughts. This is more challenging but with practice the space becomes larger and you can truly focus on the highest spiritual energy.

Breathe Easy
Breathe easy
Your breath, your mind, and your meditation practice are all intertwined with each other.
The breath is both a sign that the emotions are out of control and a means of drawing peace and harmony to the Self.
Troubled thoughts release adrenaline and stress hormones that increase outbursts of anger and undesirable consequences.
Researchers at the University of Miami found that controlled breathing, guided imagery, and meditation promote not only a positive mental attitude in women being treated for stage I or II breast cancer, but provide significant health benefits in supporting the immune system and the overall health of the body, including reduced serum cortisol levels in only 10 weeks.
Awareness of your reactions to what you experience enables you to release anxiety and block out the cause of your distress.
With awareness, you cultivate peace through control of the breath and become calmer, more loving, and in full control of your emotions.
Rather that being tossed about by the chaos of life, with the mind filled with hurtful and punishing thoughts, you can observe your thoughts, your reactions, and choose to hold onto the peace that resides within.

Meditation for Immunity
see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil,
When you think of the reasons for having a regular meditation practice, images of calmness, inner peace, and an unruffled attitude come to mind. These relaxed states will also lower the blood pressure, steady the heart rate, and slow the aging process of the brain.
However there is a third powerful reason to meditate.
Psychoneuroimmunology is the study of the interaction between the mind of an individual and the world and how their behavior affects the immune system resulting in either health or illness.
In the seventies, a Harvard study discovered a special group of receptors on the immune cells distributed throughout the body. This was a major breakthrough and shone new light upon what we know about the immune system. The research demonstrated that the immune system is not an independent self-directed system; rather it has an actual connection with the conscious mind and the effect of thoughts upon the body.
This means that the mind and the body interact with one another in previously unthought-of ways.
Meditation helps this process by directing your thoughts to those that are positive.
No longer do scientists regard cells as operating independently of one another. The energy behind a single thought can alter a cell with either a positive or negative result. When you are exposed to a specific event, it is how your mind reacts that determines the response, rather than the actual event itself.
For example, when you are in a negative state of mind, your body shows a marked decrease in cells responsible for protection against infection and disease.
A positive state of mind has the reverse effect, promoting a healthy immune system, increasing lymphocyte and T-cell activity, and decreasing stress hormones.
This helps you to stay healthy and fight infection by boosting the immune system.

Easy to Use Mantra
Patanjali: author of the Yoga Sutras
What's in your mind?
It is estimated that the average person has over 60,000 thoughts every day. Not all of these thoughts are happy approving ones though.
When you get into the habit of monitoring your thoughts and subsequent actions through meditation, you develop the ability to discern what you are thinking and can then choose to replace the negative, nay-saying thoughts with ones that are encouraging, upbeat and supportive in their energy.
Protecting your mind
A mantra is a mental or auditory word or phrase, often with a personal or sacred meaning. Derived from the roots of two Sanskrit words; manas, referring to the mind, and tra, meaning that which protects, a mantra is therefore a thought, word, or sound which protects the mind.
It serves as a replacement for unwanted thoughts by pulling the mind back to concentration, allowing you to develop single-pointed focus. You can repeat or chant a mantra, focusing on the meaning and the sound, while hearing the mantra vibrate within you.

Your very own shield
With regular meditation, you become familiar with detecting thoughts as they appear and by the use of a mantra, your chosen word or phrase rises up like a shield to protect you from either your own self-deprecating thoughts or hurtful energy directed at you from another person or situation.
OMMMM
Om is known as the first mantra. If the mind has a tendency to wander or unwanted thoughts enter the field of awareness, it provides a simple means to relax the mind and allow it to surrender into the peaceful influence of this singular point of focus. Om (also known as AUM) will be written about in more detail in a future blog. To begin though, develop the habit of repeating a mantra, either Om or one of your choice.

TODAY'S EDGE: Mantra
Traditionally, mantras are repeated 108 times, signifying one complete round. You can say as many rounds as you want to every day. Over time, you will notice that the mantra does have both a protective and a positive effect on the way that you think and subsequently act because you are replacing negative thoughts with more beneficial views and beliefs.
Try looking at yourself in the mirror and telling yourself “I Love You.” Do it 108 times every day for a week. Notice how you feel every day.
You can continue with this phrase or repeat a different one, so long as it is meaningful to you and not derogatory in any way.
Om is the most powerful mantra and the vibration is said to resonate with the universe. Meditation upon the sound of Om will therefore give you knowledge of Om and of the whole universe.
Mantra can be repeated silently during meditation or when walking and is easy to carry around with you and perform.
Keep it short and say it like you mean it.
Soon you will not only mean it, you will believe it even when you’re not saying it.
Meditation is for life.

Part1: How To Meditate to be Healthy Wealthy and Really Smart
What is Meditation
Each blog posting will take you through the process in detail. It's not something to be rushed, and learning how not to feel pressured or rushed is definitely a topic for another day. You are not alone in your attempts to meditate and if you follow the techniques each day, you will be on your way to a healthy life, filled with a wealth of knowledge on how to make tough choices.
There is often some confusion as to what's really going on when a person meditates.
First, if you are someone who is either new to meditation or have tried it in the past and struggled, the mind is not "empty."
Meditation is a single pointed focus and you can do it when sitting in a quiet place, with your eyes closed or open, when walking outdoors, or even by a window watching the clouds drift by.
The important thing to remember is to concentrate.
That's the hard part. When we still our bodies, or take a quiet stroll and attempt to focus on one thing, we succeed for a few moments only to have feelings or thoughts intrude and before we know it we've forgotten all about our meditation and we're off thinking about something else.
To begin any meditation, try to focus on an object within your mind's eye. I like to teach new students the technique of focusing on a flame of a candle. Keep trying this and you should find it gets easier with practice.
That's the Healthy Wealthy and Really Smart way to begin.
